What staff from CUSP say: If we want children to have the best chance of remembering what they have learned, we want to activate both their semantic memory and their episodic memory. CUSP simply provides a framework for how knowledge can be sequenced in a way that helps pupils to revisit it over time and a pedagogical framework that allows them to master routines so that they can redirect their cognitive attention to the demanding concepts we want them to interreact with. The connecting of knowledge, or schema-building, simply addresses the semantic memory. It is the teachers' skill and knowledge of their children that will set this knowledge in children's episodic memories, through explicit instruction and then rich and varied opportunities to explore, play, talk, sing, move... with that new knowledge. This multi-sensory and rich approach to learning should be evident across the school, in different forms, of course. All underpinned by purposeful learning. My next place would be to explore Prof Coe's poor proxies for learning, as this outlines some of the challenges around 'engagement'.

We want our children to know more, remember more and can do more. We couldn't advocate joyful, active classrooms more!
