Summary

This is a version of our beginner’s Power BI course that we have adapted for people working in education - schools, colleges, training providers and universities. The activities are education focused. It is designed for people who have little or no Power BI experience.

The course is built around Power BI Desktop - you need your own copy (free from Microsoft). Like all our Power BI courses, we put a lot of emphasis on practical, hands-on activities in Power BI Desktop.

Course content includes:

  1. An introduction to Power BI Desktop
  2. Formatting and then importing data from MS Excel
  3. Building simple reports
  4. Solving problems with calculated columns
  5. Using simple Measures
  6. More complex reports
  7. Sharing reports via the online Power BI service

The course is designed so that you:

Build a solid Power BI foundation Become a productive Power BI user - you can start producing valuable reports.

Prerequisites

To get maximum value from the course you need to have reasonable MS Excel skills. You should know how to:

  1. Use basic formulas in Excel
  2. Convert data into Excel ‘tables’.
  3. Filter columns, format data (numbers, text etc.) and columns that are based on formulas.

These skills are important because we look at how data in Excel should be formatted before import in Power BI Desktop.

Can I bespoke the course?

The best way to bespoke the course is to ask us to build around your own data. We can replace our own course sample data with some of your spreadsheets. That way at the course you have a working, fully interactive report built in Power BI Desktop that you can use and share with colleagues.

Online training requirements

You will need:

  • A good internet connection
  • Webcam & audio
  • MS Windows PC with Power BI Desktop (download is free from Microsoft).

Outcomes

At the end of the Microsoft Power BI for Educators (Beginners) training course you should be able to:

  1. Understand how to format data in MS Excel before importing it into Power BI.
  2. Design and build reports for a non-technical audience - with ideas and examples for an education audience.
  3. Use calculated columns and measures to enhance your data and make reports more powerful.
  4. Share reports with colleagues via Power BI Online.

You finish the course with the foundation you need to continue to develop your own skills.
