Summary

The Science of Motivation: What is motivation for learning? How does it work? How can we influence it in the classroom? This session will offer a framework of 5 big ideas from the evidence on motivation plus 5 key strategies we can use to boost attention and effort in the classroom, drawing links with the Avanti Teacher Toolkit.

Motivation for learning is the inner or outer drive that propels individuals to engage in and persist with educational activities. It can be intrinsic, stemming from personal interest, or extrinsic, driven by external factors like rewards or grades. Key components of motivation include goal setting, autonomy, relatedness, and competence. Educator Peps McCrea has explored this subject in depth.

In the classroom, teachers can influence motivation by creating a positive learning environment, setting clear goals, offering choices, providing constructive feedback, and using diverse teaching methods. Emphasizing real-world relevance, fostering a growth mindset, and helping students monitor their progress are also effective strategies. McCrea's work provides valuable insights and practical advice for educators seeking to enhance motivation in educational settings, offering a deeper understanding of this crucial aspect of learning and teaching.
